CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Karamatsu Matsuno
Age: Early twenties! Age isn’t specified in canon beyond this, but I usually go with 23.
Canon: Osomatsu-san
Canon Point: Post Episode 23
Character Information: Karamatsu’s page on the wiki!
Personality: Karamatsu is the second eldest of a group of identical sextuplets, characterized by their status as NEETs who refuse to work or do anything productive in society, all of them having “the same face” both in that regard and literally. However, from his heavy brows to penchant for leather to his fiercely debonair attitude, Karamatsu’s personality couldn’t be more different from that of his twin brothers.
When describing Karamatsu, the first and usually only descriptor anyone who knows him will use is “Painful”. Painful in the sense that the way he acts and the things he does tend to be so excessive and over-the-top that his peers are caused both emotional and physical pain. Perhaps this is due to the sheer amount of second-hand embarrassment they get from being in Karamatsu’s presence, but that doesn’t deter Karamatsu from being who he is. He’s excessively confident and makes every effort to stand out in the group, most commonly accomplishing this with the black shades, leather jackets, and sequined numbers that he wears with no shame whatsoever. His brothers- and most everyone else- ignore him blatantly and don’t really tend to entertain his antics, though this only seems to encourage Karamatsu to stand out even more.
Self-image is everything to Karamatsu. Rarely is he seen without a mirror in hand to check his appearance, and it’s easy for him to become so wrapped up in himself that everything else is at risk of going over his head. With Karamatsu having an ego that could fill a football stadium, it’s easy to fit him into the category of a narcissist. While Karamatsu is portrayed as generally kinder and more sympathetic than the rest of his brothers, it’s been said that Karamatsu is “only nice because he likes to see himself as being nice”. It would be easy too, then, to assume that the way Karamatsu acts is all out of malicious intent to only make himself look better, but this actually isn’t the case. What Karamatsu seeks above all else is to be liked, and his rationale in this is that if he’s a good person, people will see him as a “good guy”, “that guy” who is always there for you and who you can count on and look up to. But in trying so hard to be “that guy”, Karamatsu takes that desire and ramps it up to 11 to the point where he’s trying way too hard. As a result, he comes off as a poser, someone putting up a front and trying to seem better than everyone else when he really isn’t. And unfortunately…this is part of what he does, though trying to hurt people with the way he acts is never intentional.
For example, in episode 10, Karamatsu confides with his only older brother Osomatsu and tells him that he doesn’t understand why people act the way they do when they’re around him. “People keep pointing at me and saying ‘painful’. But I haven’t hit them, or kicked them. Why are they in pain?” “I don’t live for the sake of hurting anyone. Why is it that I love everyone so much, yet I hurt them?” It’s likely that Karamatsu doesn’t truly understand what really being “loved” or “liked” feels like, because it’s shown time and time again that he’s treated extremely poorly by his brothers. Even in Osomatsu-kun, Karamatsu was the punching bag, the “comic relief” of the bunch. In episode 5, “The Karamatsu Incident”, friend of the brothers Chibita literally kidnaps Karamatsu and threatens his life for ransom, but his brothers are easily distracted and ultimately forget all about their brother’s plight. Following this, Chibita ties Karamatsu to a burning stake just feet from their front door and threatens to kill him a second time. His brothers’ response? Throw pots and pans at him out the window before going back to bed. Then, immediately following this, the entire second half of the episode is spent following one of his younger brothers, Ichimatsu, whereas Karamatsu is noticeably absent throughout. Only in the last seconds of the episode does he turn up with crutches and bandages covering his body, having been entirely ignored by his whole family despite his injuries.
What do you do when you try so hard to be liked and noticed, yet get constantly ignored despite your efforts? For Karamatsu, it just means he has to try harder. It’s interesting to note that very rarely does Karamatsu get angry or violent in comparison to the rest of his brothers, preferring to both keep the peace and draw that negative attention to himself (such as the multiple times Ichimatsu targets Karamatsu for threats and outbursts). Karamatsu is completely honest and genuine with everything he does because he wants that love and validation so badly. And, in a way, if he doesn’t love himself, who else is going to? So he keeps up the act, this front of cool confidence, a man who is suave and smooth with both women and men. It also explains a big reason why his brothers are so quick to ignore or beat up on Karamatsu: he exudes confidence that the rest of them simply don’t have. They’re all NEETs, so what right does Shittymatsu have to act like he’s better than them, or anyone else?
That isn’t to say that Karamatsu is an angel by any means. When left to his own devices he’s usually decent to a fault, but get him with the rest of his brothers and he will just as easily fall right into their horrible antics and schemes, even going so far as to be completely willing to join forces to kill somebody. This really speaks to Karamatsu’s tendency to do what he has to to be liked, particularly by his siblings. Of course he’s going to go along with what they’re doing as a whole if that means he gets to be included in it. Even if that “it” happens to be taking a bat to someone’s car. There’s a certain level of hivemind mentality that goes on with the Matsuno sextuplets, and generally if one of the louder troublemakers of their group decides to do something, the rest of them will be quick to follow suit. This is true even as they’ve gotten older and are more often found doing their own thing. Karamatsu certainly isn’t immune to it, and is probably more susceptible to it than the rest.
No matter how they treat him, Karamatsu absolutely adores his brothers. Though he’s shown as being inattentive to his surroundings at times, he’s actually a lot more receptive than one might initially think, and this is especially true when it comes to situations regarding his brothers. Karamatsu finds himself in a rather odd position in the family. He’s not the oldest, he’s not the middle child, and he’s not even one of the younger siblings. He’s the second oldest, elder brother to four and with only one older brother of his own. He feels a responsibility to be there as an older sibling to the younger ones, but he also tends to look up to Osomatsu for advice, such as when he confided with him about his painfulness. It’s oftentimes hard for Karamatsu, though, when his brothers so deliberately ignore him when he does try to help…even when his help either isn’t wanted or isn’t as helpful as he thinks it is. However, there are incidences where Karamatsu successfully steps up to the older-brother plate, such as with Episode 24, “The Letter”. Osomatsu is noticeably quiet and agitated throughout one scene in the episode, and Karamatsu seems to be the only person in the room- including their parents- to notice. Karamatsu even can be heard trying to reign in Jyushimatsu, who had been running around the room and accidentally bumping into Osomatsu, making him even that more angry. Nobody else notices this, and because everyone still ignores Karamatsu, it isn’t until Osomatsu kicks Jyushimatsu and threatens him that the rest catch on to something not being right. And in this instance, instead of his usual purple prose and extravagant speeches, Karamatsu punches and then physically removes Osomatsu out of the situation so he can calm down without saying a single word. Karamatsu might be oblivious at times and easily absorbed in his own self, but when it counts- and especially when it relates to his brothers- he’s the most attentive of them all.
He knows more than anyone what it’s like to not have someone to back you up, and he’s not about to let that happen to anyone else. He’s going to be “that guy”. In the end, Karamatsu’s worst enemy in this pursuit is Karamatsu. He’s very eager and passionate, but he lets his own self get in the way of actually being true to himself and who he is. Really, it’s hard to pinpoint who Karamatsu “truly” is, because who he is happens to be a person who puts on this big show in the hopes that someone will notice and maybe crack a smile in his direction. Karamatsu is also shown to be very sympathetic and quick to cry, which is also why he’s less likely to wear his heart on his sleeve unless that sleeve is studded and covered with sequins. That heart comes out in his cheesy one-liners oozing with confidence, or the songs he makes up while playing his guitar on the roof. He’s probably both the most selfish and selfless person all wrapped up into one sparkly, painful package.
But if even just one person likes that, then it’d all be worth it to Karamatsu.
